Separating Technique: Oil and Water Experiment

When you look around us, most of the substances that we use are not in their pure form. Sometimes they are mixtures of two or more substances. By separating the components of this mixtures, we are able to find out the properties of these substances and be able to use it for other purposes such as production of chemicals that can help our everyday lives.

There are a lot of separation techniques that we can use depending on the mixtures that we want to separate. In this activity, we are going to separate two liquids from one another.

"Oil and water do not mix together, and the reason for this is the difference between the density of the two liquids."

Oil always floats on top of the water. Oil is less dense than water. To separate them, a process called decantation is used. This process separate two immiscible liquid from each other.
